The Adventurers

Diary Comics by Kelly Tindall

new strips every wednesday and friday
Another Adventurers from our recent trip to Vancouver! “Vancouver I” is coming next week, I’m bouncing around with these. This one co-stars my excellent pal Mike Wilson, who you should be following on Tumblr.
As always, a new Strangebeard is up right over here. Winding down the first part, and I’m very excited for Part 2.

The Ottawa Comic Con was this past weekend, and I had a super great time. Here’s a selection of sketches I did for the awesome folks who stopped by the table. I gave away all my Strangebeard postcards, sold out of prints and most of my books, and met some amazing folks (including George Perez, Pia Guerra, and Ian Boothby.)

Here’s the sketches:

• Girl as Supervillain

• Bloody Skeleton (Pre-blood)

• Steampunk Glove

• The Man With No Name (Blondie)

• Guy as Wolverine

• Boy Riding a Dragon

• The Fly

• Gentleman Ghost

• Pirate Reading a Book

• Girl as Princess Leia

My daughter loves both trucks and lifting things, which are two things than neither my wife nor myself are particularly fond of.

I’ll be at the Ottawa Comic Con this weekend, and I’m pleased to report that I’ll be selling one-of-a-kind wanted posters! I’m hand-dying paper to create the proper piratical look; once you’ve bought one I will customize a pirate based on you, give them a piratical name, and a list of heinous crimes.
I will have very limited quantities of both these posters and special Strangebeard postcards; get them while you can!

Today is the second birthday of my darling daughter, and my amazing partner in The Adventurers. She’s at daycare right now but she’s asked for cake for supper, and who am I to argue with such a sensible request?
Today’s strip is a painting I did for my baby featuring characters we’ve invented together. From the left are Smokey and Smäugy (two dragons that eat fire and are based on the fire trucks that are around the corner from our house), the Royal Fly Agaric Army (two talking mushrooms that appear on all my letters), T. (my daughter), Boom Cat (a cat based on my daughter’s favorite internet video), The Soup King (the king of soup, based partly on my daughter’s Uncle Sathy and partly on The Pirate King from Aardman’s The Pirates!), and Archie Dodo (a dodo).
I’ll be a guest of the Ottawa Comic Con this coming weekend. I’ll arrive late on Friday and leave early on Sunday. I’ll have Strangebeard postcards as well as original artwork, trade paperbacks and minicomics for sale.

Bonus extra Adventurers strip today. This was pretty much the only thing of note I did before going to get my kid from daycare early; she, of course, was having a merry time and didn’t miss me at all.

Thanks to 4th Wall in Montreal for having me out on Saturday, it was super fun. I sketched with Karine Charlebois and Andy Belanger and had a lovely time.

This one’s kind of personal, I dunno. My wife asked me the other day if I’m ever worried about our daughter, going out with her, looking after her, and I said, “I worry about everything, all of the time, 24 hours a day.”
I’m trying to be less of a helicopter dad, put it that way.
It’s Free Comic Book Day tomorrow, and I’ll be signing and sketching at The 4th Wall here in Montreal. I’ll only be there from 10-1, though, so come early. Strangebeard fans might get a treat, too!
Speaking of which, the latest Strangebeard strip (all about the death of Papa Mojo) is up right over here.
I did a fill-in strip for my pal Brian McLachlan’s super fun webcomic The Princess Planet today. He wrote me a proper piratical script and it was a ton of fun drawing his characters. Brian and I have a lot in common; our kids are roughly the same age, we’re both freelance/comics guys, and we both love Lego.

One of the great equalizers for the bad stuff your children put you through is definitely the fact that you can put them in whatever ridiculous clothes you want. What you pick is never as crazy as what they pick, though.

Dealing with a sick kid is brutally difficult. Definitely one of the harder aspects of parenting. I should be happy that the illnesses that have befallen my daughter are usually of a pretty soft variety, but it never really gets easier.
